Course Outline: BTA3O
Information & Communication Technology: The Digital Environment

This course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands-on approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software applications. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or postsecondary studies.


UNITS OF STUDY

Unit 1: Digital Literacy (15 hours)
· The computer workstation environment including hardware, software, and networks
· Strategies for organizing electronic files and folders
· Effective tools and techniques for electronic research

Unit 2: Productivity Software / Business Communications (60 hours)
· Advanced features of word processing software
· Advanced features of spreadsheet software
· Managing information using database software
· Design software (graphic, presentation, and publication)
· Accepted communication standards and formats
· Electronic communication tools
· Digital portfolio

 Unit 3: E-business (25 hours)
· E-business concepts and operations
· Evaluating the impact of e-business
· Design and create an e-business website

Unit 4: Ethics and Issues (10 hours)
· Legal, social and ethical issues of information and communication technology
· Privacy and security issues of conducting e-business
· Health and environmental issues of information technology

CLASSROOM POLICIES:
  1. Respectful and Safe Environment: Mutual respect! Treat others as you would wish to be treated.
  2. Snacking: Absolutely no food or drink in the computer room, NOT EVEN WATER!.
  3. Checking e-mail or chatting online is not permitted, unless you have permission from the teacher
  4. Playing games and/or music on the computer/Internet is not permitted.
  5. Punctuality: Arrive to class ON TIME and PREPARED. If you arrive anytime after the bell you are considered late. Repercussions will be discussed in class regarding lateness.
  6. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Skipping class is NOT acceptable. If you miss a quiz or test, you must present a doctor’s certificate or a note signed by your parent/guardian. You must come prepared to write the test/quiz the day you return to school on your own time. It is your responsibility to catch up on all notes, assignments and tasks that you have missed. 
  7. Nature Breaks: Only one out at a time. Nature breaks are for going to the washroom, not the cafeteria or meeting friends. If you take longer than is acceptable, you will be marked absent.
  8. iPods, Cell Phones & Other Electronic Devices: The use of iPods, cell phones and other electronic devices are not to interfere with the learning environment of yourself or others. If your use of these devices becomes an issue, they will be taken away and/or you will be referred to administration.
  9. Collaboration with your peers is encouraged, especially when you don't know how to do something! It is impossible for me to help everyone at the same time. Use your time wisely; explore the computer to see if you can figure it out yourself. If you are still unsuccessful, ask a classmate for help.
